Doris Included in Ireland Team But McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team announcement update

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Doris in his Ireland team for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy misses out.

The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the summer tour.

Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".

Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely experienced selection, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third fly-half selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's defeat by the English in the English city previously.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for Doris if the skipper does not regain fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
